GMAT in a Glance

Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT), conducted by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) is one of the world’s most popular entrance examinations to the management studies.  Scoring well in GMAT is very essential to make a way into the foreign universities. The recent reports reveal that the popularity of the GMAT in Indian MBA aspirants is increasing over the years than the Common Admission Test (CAT), the national level management entrance examination in India. 

GMAT attracts the applicants not only because of the availability of test date throughout the year but also one can reattempt the test five times a year in an interval of 16 days of the last attempt.  The five-year validity of the test enables the candidate to choose the best option worldwide according to their interest and sector. For example, if you are interested in energy or mining sector you can choose Canada or Australia; if you select finance or consultancy you can select the USA.

There are more than 1600 B-schools worldwide which accept GMAT score for more than 6000 business and management courses. As these courses include short-term executive programs many experienced professionals chose GMAT as the best option to give wings to their dreams.

How to Register and Apply

The applicant can easily enrol for the GMAT 2017 by log into the GMAT official website. Candidate can easily remit the examination fee of U$250 (Rs 16500 approximately) by using any one of the following methods:

    Credit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or JCB)

    Debit card (Visa or MasterCard only)

    Cashier’s check

    Money order

    Personal check (must be drawn in favour of Pearson VUE GMAT) 

The Eligibility and the Exam Pattern

GMAC didn’t put forward any special eligibility criteria to appear for the GMAT exam. Anyway he/she has to complete some criteria to pursue the studies in foreign universities.

The GMAT test is designed to assess the Writing, Reasoning, Verbal and Quantitative skills of the candidate. The total duration of the exam is 3.30 hours and the maximum obtainable score is 800. The total score of the candidate will be published by GMAC within three weeks after the exam.

Types of the Questions

Quantitative Ability [Score: 0-60]:

This part contains 37 multiple choice questions with duration of 75 minutes. This section has divided into two types

1.     Data Sufficiency items: you will be given some information, based on that you have to decide whether it is sufficient to reach the solution.

2.    Problem-solving items: you will be given a problem so you have to solve it by giving one or multiple solutions.

Verbal Ability [Score: 0-60]:

This part has 41 multiple choice questions with the duration of 75 minutes. Here will be mainly three types of questions

1.    Reading comprehension: You have to read the given paragraph on any topic and answer the questions based on it.

2.     Critical Reasoning: You have to evaluate an argument that has given to you. It may be asked to weaken, strengthen or reach a conclusion.

3.    Sentence Correction: You have to choose the correct sentence from the given sentences.

Integrated Reasoning [Score: 1-8]:

This 30-minute section has 12 questions. Here you have to encounter questions which measure your ability to understand and evaluate various types of information like graphic, numeric, and verbal information. Here we can see four types of questions namely:

1.    Multi-Source Reasoning

2.    Table Analysis

3.    Graphics Interpretation

4.    Two-Part Analysis

Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) [Score: 0-6]:

The 30-minute section contains one topic and you have to interpret the given topic.

Conclusion

It is easy to score top in the exam if you prepare well by a clear picture of the examination. Mock tests using model question papers and tools will help you to perform well in understanding the time you are taking to answer the questions. It is also useful to recognize your actual knowledge and weak spots.  As it is a computer adaptive examination it is very important to answer the first five questions well and certain twice before moving to the next page to check whether you have answered all the questions.

Every section should be attended otherwise there will be negative marks. You can manage time by doing problems you know the answer first and move to the next if you stuck. Preparing using available resources guarantees you a brighter future.
